The previous name of the country was the Kyrgyz Soviet Socialistic Republic (within USSR). Population – 5 million people. The Kyrgyzs comprise 52.4% of the population, Uzbeks comprise 14%, Russian – 12%, Ukrainians – 2.5% and Germans – 2.4% accordingly. Kyrgyz is the state language, Russian has the status of official language. Bishkek (previous name is Pishkek) is the capital of Kyrgyzstan. Bishkek was found in 1878, population exceeds 1 million people.
One of the most computerized CIS countries In accordance to the sociological researches, Kyrgyzstan occupies one of the top leading positions in CIS for the number of PCs for every hundred people. There are over 400 thousand Internet users in nearly 5-million population, this figure increases by 100 thousands people year-to-year. Hundreds of Internet-cafes, computer clubs and public centers providing free Internet access contributed to the fact that almost all Kyrgyz residents are Internet-connected.
Mobile Rush The number of the Bitel cellular network users increased by 66.67% and amounted to 300 thousands as of the end of 2004. The total number of the mobile communication users exceeds 380 thousands people.
Consumption and construction boom GDP increases by nearly 7% annually, the GDP per capita increased by 35% over past 2 years. Improving of the Kyrgyzstan’s economic environment contributed to a rapid growth of the auto park – there are over 300 thousand automobiles, buses and trucks registered in the country.
For past two years the Kyrgyz Republic witnessed a construction boom as there were more houses, offices and other buildings was build in 2003-2004 than in previous 15 years. In 2004, tens of modern trade centers were opened, in 2005, the country expects launching of two giant trade and entertainment centers with a total square of 70 thousands sq.m.
Stake on intellectual leadership The average annual university enrollment comprises 200 thousand students. Bishkek is a city of students getting higher education in over 20 universities. The students/population ratio secures the first place for Bishkek worldwide.
Industry Renascences The industry growth rate secured for Kyrgyzstan the first place CIS-wide, production output increased by 18.18% as of the end of the first six month of 2004. Kyrgyzstan's flagship companies are Kyrgyz-Canadian Joint project Kumtor, which secures for Kyrgyzstan the third place for gold production in CIS, and German venture Interglass (www.interglass.kg) – the sole producer of world class glasses which exports glass plates to the Central Asian region and Siberia.
Tourist Mecca Hundreds of thousands tourists visit Kyrgyzstan annually. They are attracted by the beautiful nature and enhanced infrastructure - excellent roads, modern hotels in Bishkek and mountains, sophisticated tourism service and the Central Asian largest airport "Manas".
